Ola capoeiristas, friends, and family!!!
It is with great pleasure that we are sending you this email and an invitation to Capoeira Aché Brasil Calgary’s Batizado e Troca de Corda on SUNDAY, MAY 9, 2010.
A Batizado (literally baptism in Portuguese, and borrowed from the religious tradition) is an annual event for a Capoeira group. Batizados are very important for the group organizing it. It is the point in the year where the new members will be baptized officially into the group and receive their first cords and where the other members depending on their progress will exchange belts. A typical batizado will take several days and consist of workshops, the actual Batizado itself and a Troca das Cordas (ie, the changing of the cords). Often many groups from more than one region will attend a Batizado for other groups. This allows for development of the game by contact with other players, teachers and styles.
In many schools, students are baptized by the floor — that is, they play against higher level capoeiristas and are subsequently taken down. This is meant to signify a continual process of humility and improvement in the game. Normally the Mestre of the group will be present during the proceedings.
This year Capoeira Aché Brasil Calgary will host its third annual event, presenting the talent of Capoeira Aché Brasil Calgary’s students, as well as students from Vancouver, Canmore, Fernie and others who will demonstrate their skill by playing capoeira with instructors, high ranking students and a renowned master of capoeira, Mestre Eclilson de Jesus of Vancouver. Attached is the poster with all the details. Please invite your friends and family. It is an amazing event to attend, especially if you’ve never seen capoeira.
The workshops will start on Friday afternoon, May 7th and run through Sunday morning, May 9th at the University of Calgary. The students who are interested in participating in workshops and/or Batizado need to register beforehand. To register call (403) 714-8612 or email capoeira.calgary@gmail.com.
We are very excited to announce that Mestrando Gordo is coming to Calgary this week and he will be teaching workshops. Mestrando Gordo lives and teaches capoeira in Brasil, and he comes to Canada only once a year. So, this is a great opportunity to learn from one of the best capoeira instructors ever and expand your knowledge and training. The workshops start this Friday and run through Tuesday, so there will be lots of capoeira!!!!
The schedule is as follows:
Friday, October 23 – 7PM
Saturday, October 24 – 5PM
Sunday, October 25 – 2PM
Monday, October 26 – Canmore
Tuesday, October 27 – 6PM.
The Friday and Saturday workshops will be held at CABC South location, at No Limits Multidisciplinary Fitness Academy, located at 6027 Centre Street S, only two blocks away from the Chinook C-train station.
Sunday and Tuesday workshops will be at CABC North location (our usual location) at #1, 3360 – 14 Ave NE, just minutes from Marlborough C-train station.
Monday workshop will be in Canmore. If you’re interested going to Canmore as well, let me know, because I have to make sure that there is space avail for you in the class.
The workshop fee is $15, but it will be so worth your money!!!
I strongly encourage you to participate in at least one workshop, because this is an amazing opportunity to learn and grow your capoeira skills!!!
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Aché,
Grandona
Oi Capoeiristas!
We were invited to do a demo for University of Calgary Idol event. U of C Idol is all about showcasing student talent, building community, having fun, and spreading spirit at the University of Calgary, through an “American Idol” style singing event. For this show, Idol “will give back” to the community by sending half of the net proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society. The other half will go to the winner of the competition.

September has started and so did the U of C Capoeira Rec Club classes. Since this week U of C is holding a Clubs Week we want to take this opportunity to promote our Club as well. We will be in front of MacEwan Hall and Kinesiology building around noon (12:00PM) tomorrow, September 17th. So if you’re on campus or can make it there, come out and play with us or just stop by to say hi. This is not an official demo, so you don’t have to wear your full uniform
