Ola capoeiristas, friends, and family!!!
It is with great pleasure that we are sending you this email and an invitation to Capoeira Aché Brasil Calgary’s Batizado e Troca de Corda on SUNDAY, MAY 9, 2010.
A Batizado (literally baptism in Portuguese, and borrowed from the religious tradition) is an annual event for a Capoeira group. Batizados are very important for the group organizing it. It is the point in the year where the new members will be baptized officially into the group and receive their first cords and where the other members depending on their progress will exchange belts. A typical batizado will take several days and consist of workshops, the actual Batizado itself and a Troca das Cordas (ie, the changing of the cords). Often many groups from more than one region will attend a Batizado for other groups. This allows for development of the game by contact with other players, teachers and styles.
In many schools, students are baptized by the floor — that is, they play against higher level capoeiristas and are subsequently taken down. This is meant to signify a continual process of humility and improvement in the game. Normally the Mestre of the group will be present during the proceedings.
This year Capoeira Aché Brasil Calgary will host its third annual event, presenting the talent of Capoeira Aché Brasil Calgary’s students, as well as students from Vancouver, Canmore, Fernie and others who will demonstrate their skill by playing capoeira with instructors, high ranking students and a renowned master of capoeira, Mestre Eclilson de Jesus of Vancouver. Attached is the poster with all the details. Please invite your friends and family. It is an amazing event to attend, especially if you’ve never seen capoeira.
The workshops will start on Friday afternoon, May 7th and run through Sunday morning, May 9th at the University of Calgary. The students who are interested in participating in workshops and/or Batizado need to register beforehand. To register call (403) 714-8612 or email capoeira.calgary@gmail.com.
